"I believe in pink" - Audrey Hepburn
Pink is feminine, pink is cute, pink is boring, we can all have our opinions on the color itself. What I will say is that Edith Piaf didn't sing "je vois la vie en rose" if pink wasn't a important color. Even Paul Simonon, bassist for The Clash, said that “pink is the only true rock and roll colour”.
Now pink exists through flowers like the cherry blossom and the rose but you wouldnt be be able to find the color anywhere else in Nature. Historically, pink as a fashionable color emerged in the 18th century. It was the colour of choice among royalty and aristocrats. I have learnt that Madame de Pompadour, King Louis XV's mistress, was one influential woman who wore pink proudly. The gendered labeling of the color pink and blue only became a phenomenon in the 1900s and mainly during the 1950s.
Yes, it all started with these movies that I miss SO MUCH. Odette's tutu in Swan Lake, the coolest mousquetaire wore pink and i could cite many others. While these movies reinforce the idea of associating pink with female childhood,
